Poker can be played with plastic chips, ceramic chips, or coins. The amount of chips needed for a betting round varies, but usually a pot will contain all of the previous bets. Alternatively, a player may choose to go “all-in,” meaning that he will put all of his chips into the pot.

Poker is usually played with a 52-card deck, although a variation is called seven-card stud. In a stud game, each player must have the best five-card hand. Depending on the game, some variations allow for a split pot between the highest and lowest hands. Sometimes a straight is used as the final hand, while other games do not.

Poker is often regarded as a descendant of the French primero and the Persian game as nas. While the exact origin of the games is not known, it is thought that the games may have been taught to French settlers in New Orleans by Persian sailors.
